Wanted: Governance Support Programme Intern at GIZ

GIZ invites applications for a 3 months internship with a possible 3 month extension. This opportunity is for students  who are currenlty enrolled at a higher-learning institutions or have graduated less than 6 months before the start of the internship. GIZ is a German development cooperation with South Africa, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

During the internship you will obtain the opportunity to gain practical experiences in the area of Good Governance by getting an insight into policies, strategies and implementation approaches of the German Development Cooperation.

You will support the project manager and advisors (national and international staff members) in Key Result Area 1 (Policy coherence and intergovernmental relations) and in Key Result Area 3 (Accountability, Administrative Justice and Public Participation) in the implementation of a variety of programme initiatives. This area of work will include the following activities:

  • Assist in the background research and editing required for the redrafting process of the Integrated Urban Development Framework
  • Conduct literature reviews into specific aspects of urban development to inform the GSP support to the Department of Cooperative Governance and the National Treasury on urban development
  • Providing research support to the Department of Cooperative Governance on the Strengthening District Government Programme
  • Assist in developing and documenting the GSP support to Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality
  • Support the logistical and thematic preparation and execution of upcoming meetings, workshops and conferences that the GSP is contributing to

In addition to this, daily organisational and administrative tasks (e.g. writing of minutes of meetings, documentation of workshops, analysis of monitoring reports) and support to the programme`s overall management will also form part of your tasks.

Please note that the above list of topics and tasks is not exhaustive and you will also have the opportunity to engage in other specific thematic areas of the programme. Some of the tasks might change during the course of the internship to correspond with the dynamic political environment in which the GSP operates.

While the main office is located in Pretoria, some travel to the partner provinces (Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga) might be required. At the end of your internship you will be required to submit a report on your activities and of your achievements within the programme

Required qualifications, competences and experience

  • You have completed your undergraduate degree and have an academic background in the field of political science, public administration, development studies, international relations, urban development, planning or another relevant field of study.
  • Preferably you have gained some practical knowledge on good governance, public administration, service delivery, poverty reduction, urban development and on the cooperation between public and private sector. Ideally you have already gathered related work experience through a previous internship.
  • Experience in monitoring & evaluation, publication and event management, qualitative research methodologies, project management and working with knowledge and information management systems will be an asset.
  • You have the ability to conceptualise ideas and to understand complex political and administrative structures in a short period of time.
  • Furthermore you have the ability to work independently; you are result-oriented and able to meet tight deadlines.
  • You are creative, enthusiastic for new challenges and able to work harmoniously with people of different cultural background.
  • Fluency in English as well as excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Very good IT-skills (Microsoft Office software package, internet research) are an additional requirement.
