Provincial Bursaries from the KZN Department of Health

The KZN Department of Health is promoting careers in Health Sciences and is offering provincial bursaries for the following fields of study: Medicine, Dietetics, Radiography (Diagnostic and Ultrasound), Occupational Therapy. Audiology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Optometry, Health Promotion & Pharmacy.

Applicants must:

Be from these Districts: Amajuba, eThekwini, Ilembe, Harry Gwala, Ugu, Umgungundlovu, Umkhanyakude, Umzinyathi, Uthukela, Uthungulu and Zululand.
Meet the training needs of the District where they reside.
The applicant must have a good academic record
Submit proof of application to a tertiary institution and CAO and his/her academic record from the university or Grade 11.
Applicants must be financially needy.
All successful candidates will be required to sign a year for year work back agreement to serve in their respective district.
The applicant must not be in receipt of another bursary
The student must not have another degree/diploma
A supportive identity documents of both parents, pay slip, death/divorce certificate and sworn affidavit to be attached stating the legal guardian or marital status of parents.
Applications will be considered on a sliding scale in terms of parents income as follow:

  • R0 – R120000 (Tuition, Meals, Books, Accommodation)
  • R121000 – R150000 (Tuition, Meals and Accommodation)
  • R151000 – R200000 (Tuition, Accommodation, Books)
  • R201000 – R250000 (Tuition, Accommodation)
  • R251000 – R300000 (Tuition only)

How to apply

All applicants may obtain a KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health Bursary Application Form from the nearest Government Hospital, Human Resource Department, to where your family home is in KwaZulu-Natal. DO NOT go to the nearest Government Hospital to where you stay while at University, it may not be your home town. You or a family member must collect and sign for the application form. You must return the FULLY COMPLETED form to the same Hospital you collected it from.

Closing date for provincial applications is 31 August 2015. Late applications will not be considered.

Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice (BCMP)

The Department of Health is also offering provincial bursaries for the study of a Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice (BCMP) at the UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA OR WALTER SISULU UNIVERSITY

Applicants must:

  • Be from KZN Province
  • Be financially needy (Combined gross income of parents must be less than R120 000), if income is above sliding scales will apply;
  • Candidates must not be older than 35 years

Candidates must attach the following:

Certified copies of Identity Document, Matric certificate with a minimum of 4 achievement level/ D symbol in all subjects;
Obtain a minimum of 15 points and above in the 3 subjects (Mathematics, Biology or Life science and Physical science)

Walter Sisulu University will only consider matric obtained from 2014.


  • Applicants must collect bursary Application forms from the Human Resource Office at all Government Hospitals, Clinics or CHC’s, Due to the volume of applications received only successful applicants will be notified.
  • All successful candidates will be required to sign an Agreement to serve bursary obligation at district.
  • Attach the following supporting documents; Identity documents of both parents, pay slip/proof of income , death/divorce certificate and sworn affidavit stating the legal guardian or marital status of parents.
  • Applicants must sign when collecting and submitting the application form to the institution where the form was obtained.
  • All Application forms must be hand delivered.

Closing date for Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice (BCMP) is 24 July 2015
