Bursary Opportunities at Gert Sibande District Municipality

The Gert Sibande District Municipality recognises the need to develop key skills in line with its business needs as well as those of the community in which it operates. The Municipality is committed to promoting the skills development initiatives of the Republic of South Africa, as well as repositioning itself as the employer of choice for graduates. Accordingly, the institution has developed a bursary scheme to enable a limited number of promising young South African students within Mpumalanga and particularly the Gert Sibande District, selected on merit to acquire tertiary qualifications in specified fields of study at certain recognised tertiary educational institutions in SA.

The Municipality is inviting students within the Gert Sibande District to apply for bursaries to be awarded for the 2018 academic year in the following fields of study:

  • Finance
  • Engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Tourism and Hospitality
  • Public Management
  • Environment Management
  • Geology.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must have been admitted or are in the process of admission at a recognised South African Higher Education Institution for full-time studies towards a formal undergraduate qualification aligned to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)
  • Applicants must be South African citizens resident in the Gert Sibande District from previously disadvantaged groups (especially women and people living with disabilities)

Applicants must not:

  • Be beneficiaries of other bursary schemes
  • Have signed a contract of employment
  • Accepted a training contract with any other company/institution
  • Applicants must be willing to be interviewed by GSDM representatives when necessary
  • Successful applicants or guardians thereof shall be expected to sign a GSDM contract and consent letter before any financial assistance could be provided.

Interested students must submit the following documents (applications with insufficient or incomplete documents shall be disqualified):

  • A standard application form (available within the HR Section of the GSDM and local municipalities) – Download here
  • Certified copy of an academic record and/or proof of acceptance with a recognised South African institution of higher learning
  • Certified copy of proof of residential or home address (it is the intention of the Municipality to offer financial assistance to prospective candidates who are originally residing and demographically distributed within the Gert Sibande Region
  • Certified copy of an Identity Document
  • An affidavit or proof of family income or main sponsor towards your studies (certified copies)
  • Confirmation or proof of acceptance/registration
  • Motivation why the bursary should be offered to you.

Applicants must take note that on completion of studies, successful bursary holders will be expected to work at any assigned stations in any of the Local Municipalities within GSDM for ± three (3) years.
