South Africa has a critical shortage of graduate-level IT skills. CapaCITi 1000 is a training, internship and intern support programme of the Cape IT Initiative (a non-profit organisation established in 1998). It was created to fast-track non-IT graduates into IT careers in critical short supply, as well as to address systemic challenges that restrict the supply of high quality, employable, “industry ready” Information Systems, Computer Science, Informatics and Software Engineering graduates.

Who can apply?

Unemployed, motivated graduates from any degree background (but particularly Arts and Social Sciences), who averaged more than 60% for their degree who want to fast track themselves to an IT career in critical short supply, and who meet our programme applicant entrance criteria , can apply online here

What programmes are offered?

Graduates can choose between the following three “fast-track” Post-Graduate Diploma (PG DIP) training and internship programmes (at NQF Level 8):

1. Business Analysis and Systems Analysis (UCT, BA SA 2012)

3. ICT Application and Infrastructure Management (UWC, PG DIP ICTAIM, 2012)

What do the programmes offer?

These programmes include the following:

• a part-time post-graduate diploma at a university (programmes vary between 9 – 15 weeks of training)
• a 9 – 12 month internship at a host company during the times when not at university (in the ICT, financial services, retail, government and other sectors – depending on host company demand)
• an intern support group programme by Cape IT Initiative (designed to support interns through our highly demanding “bootcamp” programmes.)
• possible full-time employment at the end of the programme industry placement – our aim is to ensure that at least 70% of our programme graduates get full-time employment at the end of the programme

Who are the host companies?

Host companies vary according to the programme and must meet programme host company entrance criteria. (link to copy on Host Company Entrance Criteria listed below.) Expressions of interest for interns on the 2012 programmes have been received from companies such as Old Mutual, Sanlam, The Foschini Group (TFG), Pick ‘n Pay, Shoprite, JD Group, PEP, Steinbuild, T-Systems, HCL Axon, OptiSolutions, Fundamo, DVT and City of Cape Town.

How to apply?

Apply online before 31 January 2012. Your application will be vetted by the relevant university. If you qualify, you will be invited to pitch yourself to host companies at one of the fun CapaCITi 1000 speed-pitching events and your CV information will also be made available to host companies. Interviews are done by the host company and the final decision regarding who is selected is made by the host companies.

Note that places started being filled in November 2011 and programme applications will close as soon as all places are filled. We can accommodate up to 80 candidates on BASA, 30 on SWD and 30 on ICTAIM. When completing the application, you will need to upload a photo of yourself, and (in PDF format) your CV and your latest academic records.

When does the programme start?

Internships start from January 2011 and run for between 9 to 12 months, depending on how quickly host companies select their interns. Training start dates are as follows:

3. ICT Application and Infrastructure Management: 5 March 2012

who are the programme partners? Programme funders, partners and sponsors vary according to the programme, but in the case of the 2012 PG DIP programmes include include Western Cape Government (DEDT PGWC), the SETAs of the various host companies (including INSETA), the eSkills Institute of the Department of Communications, host companies, the Universities of Cape Town and the Western Cape (UCT and UWC), sponsors and other funders and SETAs not yet confirmed.
