Internships @ Curious Pictures

Posted on under Learnerships and Internships. 1 Comment.

The purpose of Curious Pictures internship programme:

  • To provide Curious Pictures an opportunity to work with and meet young graduates; and
  • To bring new energy and new voices into the organisation.

Definitions:

Internships are mutual relationships. They are planned to be of equal benefit to the intern and to our company. There are two different kinds of interns – long term (three to six months) and short term work shadow learner programmes. Once selected, long term interms (three to six months) will work for at least 8 hours a day on a relatively regular schedule. Interns may work in exchange for professional experience, in which case the company may decide to remunerate them and/or allow them an opportunity to earn credits towards their qualifications. Interns must have clearly defined goals for what they can offer and what they intend to gain from their commitment to Curious Pictures and for the use of the resources of Curious Pictures to support these goals.

Qualified interns bring some experience and skills with them that will permit them to grow in their assignments. Advance skills are always welcome, but candidates must also have basic computer, organizational, or other office skills for admin interns (finance/production secretaries); research skills are highly recommended; organizational and people skills; basic post production skills for interns who will be considered for our Post and Resources departments. Our programs are not large enough to support applicants who have no film/tv qualifications.

Procedures for application and placement:

All applicants must be interviewed by the Office Manager and evaluated for placement by the Heads of the departments/productions under which they will be placed. Final placement in an internship in any position is at the discretion of the Managing Director.

Evaluative interviews will include discussion and clarification of the candidate’s goals, hours and duration of the internship, likely limitations, and previous experience of the candidate. Following a successful interview, the candidate’s references will be checked and a meeting with the Managing Director scheduled if necessary.

Prior to placement, a memorandum of understanding will be signed by the Intern and his/her immediate supervisor to clarify the goals and responsibilities of the internship on both sides (the intern and Curious Pictures).

Curious Pictures has two internship intake periods, January and July of each year. To be considered for the January internship, all applications are to reach us no later than the 30th of November of the preceding year and for July, applications will be open between the 1st of April and close on the 30th of May of the same year.

Special considerations:

Interns with considerable amounts of film/tv experience may be considered. Terms and conditions apply.

General Intern Responsibilities:

Interns have the same obligation as employees to act in the best interest of Curious Pictures at all times while in their employ.

Interns will be trained in and are required to observe the protocols for security, timely communication, supervisory approvals, and professional respect that employees, freelancers, and management observe. Initial work assignments are negotiated to the mutual benefit of the intern and the mentor, and include an expectation that the intern will accept all assignments within the agreement. Mentors are responsible for ensuring proper training in Curious Pictures protocols and interns are encouraged to seek assistance from any Curious Pictures staff member. Interns are also expected to recognize their limits when speaking of or for the Curious Pictures, and to refer issues to the appropriate staff.

Check the Curious Pictures website for any internships currently available

Opportunities

LRG has limited opportunities for interns each year.

What would you do?

Research an area in which LRG is developing its training programme. For example, in 2003, Steffi Rhoers from Germany spent 2 months at LRG doing research on HIV and rape. As part of this work she analysed draft legislation on the compulsory HIV testing of alleged sex offenders and wrote an article for LRG’s newsletter for magistrates News and Views. She also participated as a trainer in an HIV workshop.
You would usually need to work fulltime: i.e. a 7½ hour working day.

What qualifications should you have?

  • Ideally a law degree (from any country) although social science and humanities graduates would also be considered.
  • Good English
  • A concern about enhancing the quality of justice
  • A commitment to contributing to social change in South Africa.

How long should you stay?

To be an intern you need to be able to spend at least two months at LRG. This is because it takes at least two months to understand the needs of any project and produce useful work for it.

What can LRG provide?

  • No pay – our funding does not permit us to pay interns
  • Access to facilities at the University of Cape Town
  • Office space and access to a computer and the internet
  • A great group of colleagues deeply committed to improving the quality of justice in South Africa.
  • Access and insight to African customary law, gender issues and equality.

How do you apply?

Send your CV to (Sue Wright) with a letter explaining:

  • Why you want to work at LRG
  • When you want to work at LRG
  • How long you want to stay with us
  • What you are interested in working on
  • And giving names of at least two contactable referees with postal and email addresses and telephone numbers.

INTERNSHIP/TRAINING PROGRAMME ON PROMOTING POLICE REFORM IN AFRICA

Introduction

With pressure from civil society, political opposition, donor agencies and multilateral institutions, many countries in Africa have in recent years began the implementation of various forms of police and policing reform programmes, aimed at making the police more effective in their service delivery functions and accountable  to the community they serve. These reform programmes have ranged from community policing development projects, Human rights education for police officers, establishment of internal and external oversight mechanisms on policing, to wholesale rebuilding of police forces devastated by decades of wars in post conflict societies within the region. The success and sustainability rates of these reform programs have remained a mixed basket of advances, reversals and mounting challenges. Among the missing links are firstly lack of serious political support for accountable police forces within the region; secondly control of reform processes by foreign consultants with little knowledge of local contexts; and thirdly and perhaps most importantly, absence of civil society involvement in the  implementation of the reform programmes.

Without an active involvement of civil society organizations with requisite expertise and knowledge of concepts, issues, challenges and strategies in police reform, ongoing efforts at transforming the police and policing in the sub-region is doomed to fail. Civil society groups by their nature play the important roles of mobilizing popular support for reform programmes as well as bringing local knowledge and context to bear on formulation of reform programmes in order to make them acceptable to the people. However, civil society groups can best play these roles if they themselves are trained on the key issues that inform the reform efforts and involved in formulating and implementing such reform programmes. Therefore, there is a need for an internship/training programmes within the region that would expose civil society actors to police reform efforts as well as the large issues of public safety, security and accessible justice in Africa. Hence, CLEEN Foundation’s internship/training programme on police reform in Africa.

Purpose of the Internship Programme

The internship/training programme is intended to:

  • Increase interns understanding of concepts, issues and strategies in police reform work in Africa from civil society perspective;
  • Expose the interns to work of CLEEN Foundation on promoting public safety, security and accessible justice in Nigeria;
  • Network interns with civil society actors, government agencies and donors involving in supporting police reform work in Nigeria and Africa;

Who Can Apply?

  • Programme level staff of non governmental organizations based in Africa who are fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Nominees of NGOs working or interested in justice sector reform work in Anglophone West African countries with proven ability to adapt to new environments and to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultural backgrounds.
  • Applicants must posses a minimum of first Degree or its equivalent.

Application procedure

Interested applicants who meet the above requirements can download and fill the application form from the website of CLEEN Foundation (www.cleen.org) and forward the form with the following documents to the e-mail address cleen@cleen.org , interns@cleen.org , onyinye@cleen.org

  • A recent resume
  • A cover letter describing the nature of what the applicant has been engaged in and also areas of interest.
  • A recommendation letter from the organization

The duration of the internship/training programme is 3 weeks. Candidates are selected four times a year (January, April, July and October).We however accept applications throughout the year. Selected candidates are normally informed one month before the starting date of the internship/training programme. Due to expected large number of applicants, CLEEN Foundation is unable to inform unsuccessful candidates. Unsuccessful candidates may re-apply for following period.

Financial Aspects

The CLEEN Foundation’s Internship/training programme is on a non-remunerative basis. However, the cost of airfare, accommodation and feeding for the duration of the 3 weeks programme will be borne by CLEEN Foundation for those selected through support from Ford Foundation. Applicants that need travel and medical insurances will have to make the arrangements on their own before or on arrival and will bear the costs.
