Praxis IT Graduate Internship

Turn theory into practice

Praxis Computing seeks to contribute to the development of South African youth careers in the ICT sector through our 2007 Graduate Internship Programme. The Praxis Graduate Internship will build on the foundations laid by previous successful Praxis Graduate Internships.

We are looking for university graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds who want to build a great career in IT, and we offer the successful candidates the opportunity to work and learn at Praxis on a nine-month paid internship starting in February. We plan to award a maximum of one internship in each of the following three areas:

  • Software Development Department: Building software and systems to solve the business needs of our clients, particularly in the public sector
  • Financial Systems Department: Designing, implementing and supporting financial systems based on Microsoft Dynamics software, including eProcurement and the Business Portal
  • Network Infrastructure Services Department: building, supporting and extending the business functionality of our clients’ networked IT infrastructure – LANs and WANs based on Windows 2000/XP/.NET, Open source solutions, Web services, end user support and training.

Our expectations for this internship

The kind of people we are looking for are:

  • Highly motivated to build a serious career in IT based on delivering genuine value to clients and employers
  • The holder of at least a three-year university degree relevant to an IT career and the work being done at Praxis
  • A creative, committed and hard-working South African from a disadvantaged background
  • A contributor to the diversity at Praxis, ready to be a team player in our open, non-racial and tolerant culture
  • Able to show a personal track record as one who overcomes difficulties and cares about people as well as technology.

Successful candidates will be provided with demanding technical and communication objectives for each phase of the internship as well as for the nine months as a whole.

  • Each intern will be expected to build real practical skills within their chosen area as well as working with the rest of Praxis in providing integrated solutions to our clients
  • Each intern will be expected to learn how to listen to, understand and deliver on our customers’ needs. 
  • Each intern will be supported (and challenged!) by a mentor within Praxis.

Skills and experience gained during the internship will be helpful for new entrants to the IT job market. At the end of the internship Praxis will have the option to offer permanent posts to each intern but will have no obligation to make offers to all or any of the interns.

Legal Internships @ Women’s Legal Centre

The Women Legal Centre (WLC) seeks to advance the struggle for equality for women, particularly black women, who suffer socio-economic disadvantage, through the promotion and development of human rights for women.

The Women’s Legal Centre is accepting applications for Legal Internships from students who have completed at least one year of legal studies. All internships are unpaid.

The cover letter should indicate your available dates for the internship. You will be required to submit a writing sample to complete the application process. The topics for the writing sample will be sent to you once your initial application is received. Internships @ Legal Resource Centre

Since 1979, the LRC has welcomed visiting interns from all over the world. Over the years, interns have contributed to the growth of the LRC and to the achievement of the LRC’s goals and successes.

The LRC accepts applications from students who have completed at least one year (though preferably two years) of their legal studies, from lawyers and from other suitably qualified professionals.

Interns who apply for and are granted an internship from outside South Africa are considered to be volunteers.  The LRC does not pay a stipend or remunerate interns in any way. Medical insurance and/or travel insurance should be obtained prior to the intern’s departure for South Africa. The LRC does not provide any medical benefits or insurance to interns.

The work that an intern is typically involved in during their time at the LRC ranges from legal research, drafting legal memoranda, providing legal opinions, interviewing clients and assisting the LRC in preparing applications and actions.

Should you consider applying for an internship we urge you to access the information available on the LRC website.  You may wish to read the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and other publications of which the Autobiography of President Nelson Mandela is a good example. Once you have been accepted to an office for an internship we urge you to get more location-specific information from the Regional Director in that office.
