The film industry is very close to our hearts and we believe in the potential of this sector not only to enhance arts and culture- but also to make an even greater impact on our country’s economy. It is for this reason that MultiChoice contributes to the expansion of this sector through its Film Skills Development Programme. This programme aims to broaden the industry’s skills pool by developing previously disadvantaged individuals, who are within the film industry. It provides them with the necessary advanced training and mentorship to progress further, to pursue careers in the local film industry. The programme was launched in 2007. Individuals from a variety of backgrounds graduated from the programme. The filmmakers were handpicked for the intensive twenty week training programme. The training provided is hands-on and leading South African filmmakers share their knowledge of research, scriptwriting, production, camera lighting and editing with those who participate in this training programme. Some of the graduates have received accolades for their work from local and international film festivals.

University Programme

MultiChoice provides bursaries for individuals from disadvantaged communities in Maths and Science related studies. A number of these young men and women are attracted to careers in the broadcast technology sector and end up pursuing employment opportunities there.

Visit www.multichoice.co.za for more details.

Sasol Bursary Scheme is a talent based scheme, as a result, only applicants who meet the minimum criteria will be invited to a selection interview. It is a comprehensive package that covers both financial as well as developmental support throughout the study period. All applications are done electronically, not only to speed up the selection process but also to ensure fairness and electronic tracking of applications received within a particular period. For more information on how to qualify please read further.

Consequently, we give preference to those candidates with an exceptional academic record who also participate in extra curricular activities. Due consideration is also given to those individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who meet our minimum requirements. Applications for a Sasol bursary close on 29 February 2012. We prefer to receive all applications online via our online application process found at this site.

This speeds up the process and ensures comprehensive electronic tracking of all applications. We receive, on average, 5000 applications each year. These applications are screened by our recruitment office and results in between 300 and 400 individuals being invited to attend an interview. Of these, only 80 to 100 will be awarded a Sasol bursary.

The number of bursaries awarded each year is dependent on the business need. Consequently, failure to secure a Sasol bursary is not necessarily due to poor performance on the part of the applicant but may be a reflection of insufficient business demand. Sasol is a petrochemical company and hence the majority of bursaries awarded are in the engineering, science and commerce fields listed under fields of study.

Fields of study

The Sasol bursary scheme offers bursaries on the basis of a service binding contract after graduation for a period equal to the tenure of the bursary. Applications may be submitted for one of the following fields of study:

For the second year running, SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts (SENA) has awarded more than R1-million in music education bursaries to deserving students.

This year, 117 SAMRO Music Study Bursaries of R9 000 apiece were awarded, bringing the total value to R1,053-million. The bursaries are awarded every year on merit to students who wish to pursue full-time music study at a South African university.

“Since we started the bursary scheme 30 years ago, in 1981, SAMRO has awarded 1 404 bursaries to help students with their tuition fees, says André le Roux, General Manager: SAMRO Endowment for the National Arts. “We have also given out a further 60 overseas music scholarships since 1962. These bursaries, scholarships and other sponsorships collectively add up to more than R50-million that SAMRO has invested in music education since its inception. Supporting educated artists who understand their craft certainly makes the long-term value of these grants to the country and the industry tangible.”

He said that many students who receive SAMRO bursaries go on to do well in SAMRO’s annual Overseas Scholarships Competition, which enables the winners to study music at postgraduate level at an international tertiary institution of their choice.

Both the bursaries and the overseas scholarships have already yielded several music luminaries and Standard Bank Young Artist winners, and serve as an important stepping stone to a sustainable professional music career. SAMRO’s support has not only been academic, but initiating the Moshito music conference and expo has benefited music education at an industry level as well.

SAMRO further supports these musicians throughout their career trajectory by commissioning original compositions – a total of 371 to date – which adds to the country’s music canon while providing much-needed work and income for composers. “We have built valuable relationships with students, musicians and educational institutions over the decades, and now have a large family of SAMRO alumni,” says Le Roux.

The majority of this year’s bursaries – 74 – were awarded to undergraduate candidates in the general music study fields of Western art, jazz and indigenous African music. Twenty grants were awarded for music education study, 13 for music composition study, and 10 for postgraduate research into indigenous African music forms.

Le Roux added that it was a heartening sign that more students were showing interest in researching and writing about indigenous music, and in studying music composition. The increase in applications for these fields that have traditionally battled to attract applicants can be partly attributed to more vigorous marketing from SAMRO’s side to raise awareness and interest in these particular bursaries, as well as the increase in students studying composition and indigenous music research at universities.
