Bursary Opportunities @ Rio Tinto
Posted under Bursaries and Scholarships •South Africa
Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) supports 30 bursars, which requires an annual intake of between four and eight students. The bursary’s duration depends on the field of study: a student undertaking a four year qualification, such as a BSc in mechanical engineering, would be financed for four years.
The RBM bursary scheme is open to all candidates, with strong preference given to historically disadvantaged South Africans and candidates who live in RBM’s local communities. A student’s ability in mathematics, science, English and accounting is considered when applications are screened.
To be considered for a bursary, an applicant should have aspirations to pursue one of the following disciplines:
- Mining, electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering
- Metallurgy
- Geology/surveying/drilling
- Chemistry
- Environmental science
- Accounting
Our bursary holders pursue their studies at South Africa’s major tertiary institutions, including the universities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch, KwaZulu-Natal, Witwatersrand and Pretoria.
Upon successful completion of their studies, bursary holders are taken on as graduates in training. They are required to work for RBM for the number of years for which their studies were financed.
RBM also provides opportunities for internships. Adverts are issued internally and externally on local community noticeboards. Successful applicants are taken on a six month contract as in service trainees, which may be extended to a year if the need arises. There is no obligation for the company to employ the trainee at the end of their contract, but trainees can apply for permanent, vacant positions that arise during their internship.
How do I apply?
An advert inviting suitable candidates to apply is issued around July each year, and the closing date is usually a month later. Other adverts are delivered to local high schools by officers from RBM’s Public and Community Relations department. Colleagues from RBM’s Recruitment team conduct the initial screening and assess candidates. Short listed candidates are then interviewed by the training officer and representatives from line management and the successful candidates are awarded bursaries.
Reginald Gwala, RBM’s training officer, is in charge of the RBM bursary scheme. His contact details are:
