Bursary Opportunities @ Rio Tinto

Posted under Bursaries and ScholarshipsSouth Africa

Palabora awards bursaries each year primarily based on academic merit. The scheme focuses on students who are:

  • High achievers, from local as well as surrounding provinces
  • High performing secondary school scholars in their first year of study
  • High performing university students in their second or third year of study
  • And who are not currently receiving sponsorship from any other institution

Tertiary students who achieve a minimum of 60 per cent for their modules will be eligible for selection. Where academic qualifications are very similar, other factors will be considered, such as: the nature of the courses studied; the student’s financial position; whether the applicant is an employee’s child, and if so, the parent’s length of service.

The number of bursaries offered each year is determined by Palabora’s selection committees and will depend upon the needs of the business. Only students whose intended studies fall into the following fields will be considered:

  • Earth science, environmental science, geology
  • Mining, mechanical, electrical, chemical engineering
  • Metallurgy
  • Financial management, accountancy
  • Human resource management

Bursaries are awarded initially for one year and are then renewed annually subject to satisfactory academic progress and conduct during the year of study. The bursary covers full payment of registration fees, tuition fees, residence or private accommodation fees and a book allowance of R5,000 per year.

On completion of tertiary study, bursars will be placed on Palabora’s graduate development programme. At the management’s discretion, these graduates will commit to one year of work for each year they were sponsored.
