Bursaries @ Anglo Platinum

Anglo Platinum takes a broad view of the development of young professionals. That is, all development is, from the moment the bursar joins the scheme, aimed at producing a well-educated and developed young professional. All new bursars are assessed in terms of readiness for full-time tertiary study and suitability for the chosen career. Based on this assessment, they are routed to either undertake the Exposure Year (see later) or commence with full-time tertiary study. The development process is (a) Exposure Year (if this is needed), (b) full-time tertiary study at a tertiary institution (which is integrated with periods of practical training) and concluding with (c) a graduate training phase which provides additional company specific technical development and finally equips the young professionals with all that they will need to translate all their previous development into top class performance in the workplace.

What the bursary covers
The Anglo Platinum bursary covers the following:
- Full tertiary registration and tuition costs
- Residence fees or, if the bursar chooses to live privately, a generous living out allowance
- Book allowance
- A very generous personal allowance for the period that the bursar is at the tertiary institution
- A one-off computer allowance which is made available to students who are in their second year of study
- Medical and death benefit cover
- 14 days paid time off per annum
- Reimbursement for travelling costs incurred by bursars when they travel to sites for practical work and back to the tertiary institution
It is a bursary condition that University-based bursars are required to work eight week’s vacation work at one of the Company’s sites. Technikon-based bursars are required to undergo their University of Technology (previously Technikon) Experiential Training at one of the Company’s sites. Allowances are paid to bursars for any period of practical training that bursars undertake. In addition, board and lodging are provided at a nominal rate
Minimum requirements and selection criteria
To be eligible for selection for an Anglo Platinum bursary, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
Tertiary Route
Mining Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (light and heavy current), Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Geology, Rock Engineering, Mine Surveying and Analytical Chemistry
Mathematics and Science at the C Higher Grade or B Standard Grade levels
Finance/Accounting
- Mathematics at the C Higher Grade or B Standard Grade levels. Good school performance in Accounting and/or Business Economics would be an advantage.
Anglo Platinum also offers bursaries to students who have already commenced with tertiary study in all of the abovementioned disciplines and who are performing at a high academic standard. The Exposure Year does not apply to new bursars who have already commenced with tertiary study.
Human Resources
- Anglo Platinum does not offer bursaries for the Human Resources discipline. However, students who have obtained at least a three-year qualification in an appropriate field are eligible for selection and appointment directly into the company’s Graduate Development programme.
Practical Route
Anglo Platinum also offers Practical Route bursaries for Mine Ventilation/Environmental Control, Mining and Mine Surveying. Bursars who follow this route would not attend a tertiary institution but would be developed on site through course-based and practical interventions.
There is currently no tertiary course available for Mine Ventilation/Environmental Control. The provision of the theory is thus conducted at Anglo Platinum. The minimum selection criteria for Mine Ventilation and Mine Surveying Practical Route are Martic/Grade 12 Maths and Science D Higher Grade or C Standard Grade.
To be eligible for Mining Practical Route, applicants must have done Maths and Science at Matric/Grade 12 level
Obligation
Anglo Platinum runs its Bursary Scheme with the sole purpose of bringing well-qualified young professionals into the lower professional ranks of the organization. For this purpose, Anglo Platinum’s intention is for all of its bursars to join the organization once they obtained their qualifications.
In order for Anglo Platinum to reap benefit from the investment made in its Bursars, certain service obligations will be imposed. Please note that this is standard practice in all companies that offer bursaries.
Selection Process
The selection process is as follows:
- Interested candidates must apply for a bursary by submitting a fully completed application form to Anglo Platinum Development Centre (Bursaries Department, PO Box 450, Kroondal, 0350). The closing date for applications is 15 May each year.
- Applications are paper screened by the staff of the Anglo Platinum Development Centre.
- Applicants who pass the paper-screening phase are invited to a preliminary interview at mutually convenient locations throughout South Africa. These interviews normally take place during June each year and are conducted by staff from the Young Professionals Department.
Successful applicants from the preliminary interview stage are invited to final interviews at the Anglo Platinum Development Centre in Rustenburg. Panels of senior staff from the disciplines concerned conduct these interviews. These interviews normally take place during July each year and applicants would spend two full days at the Development Centre. A final selection is made at the final interviews
The primary criteria used to select bursars are as follows:
- Academic potential/performance
- Suitability for the chosen career
- Suitability for a career in Anglo Platinum
In addition, each discipline is looking for particular traits that are known to be required by people who are successful in the discipline concerned and various means are employed to assess whether or not an applicant has or is likely to develop these traits. These means are partly based on the results of Psychometric Assessments that are conducted at both the preliminary and final interviews.
The selection process is not based on any one criterion – each applicant is looked at from all of the points of view noted above and decisions are made based on the overall picture of the applicant.
